Memorial Call for Life Member, Firefighter Kirg Rupert Sr.

The department and community has lost an incredible man. Kirg Rupert Sr passed away on Sunday while in Florida at his winter getaway.

Kirg Sr was a Life Member of the department and contributed decades of service. He also served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War. Kirg Sr was heavily involved with our department operations at the Motordrome Speedway. Kirg Sr’s sons Kirg Jr and Bill as well as his grandson Dylan also accompanied him in the department.

To his loving wife Eileen and the Rupert family, we want to thank you for sharing his time on Earth with us. Kirg Sr was one of a kind as he contributed a lifetime of service. He will be greatly missed by so many.

Kirg J. Rupert Sr., 75, of Smithton, died in Lakeland, Fla., Sunday, April 18, 2021, while enjoying their winter get away. He was born Feb. 18, 1946, in Mt. Pleasant, a son of Harold G. Rupert Sr. and Ruth (Shelkey) Stewart. He was a graduate of West Newton High School and married his high school sweetheart, Eileen (Johnston), on Oct. 23, 1963. He enlisted in the Navy after graduating in 1964, and was stationed on several different ships, ending his five-year stint on the USS Camden as a Machinist Mate Second Class. After the Navy, he was employed by the Port Authority of Allegheny until his retirement in February of 1994. "Rupe" enjoyed spending time with his family and friends camping, hunting, and being involved in local stockcar racing events. He was a member of Jacobs Creek Baptist Church and was involved in many organizations, including the Smithton VFD, where he was a life member, the American Legion Post No. 790 of Smithton, the D.A.V. (Disabled American Veterans), life member of Amalgamated Transit Union Local No. 85, and most recently and much loved B.H.O. (Bikers Helping Others). He is survived by his loving wife, Eileen (Johnston) Rupert; sons, Kirg Jr. and wife, Nancy, Scott and fiancee, Traci Lin Knight, Billy and fiancee, Shelly Shaw-Stewart, and Tim and girlfriend, Katie Vargo; grandson, Dylan; and many loved stepgrand- and stepgreat-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Cynthia (Rupert) Feenstra (James); many nieces and nephews, who he dearly loved; and many cherished friends. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his stepfather, Clark Stewart; and a brother, Harold Rupert Jr. Family and friends will be received from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday and 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at L.L. BARTHELS FUNERAL HOME INC., Second Street, Smithton. Additional visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Tuesday in the funeral home. Funeral service will be at noon at the gravesite in Westmoreland Memorial Park, Greensburg, with Pastor Bill Baird officiating. Military rites will be accorded by the Armburst Veterans Association. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to B.H.O. at 132 Kelly Road, Smithton, PA 15479, or the Disabled American Veterans at 1000 Liberty Ave. No. 1606, Pittsburgh, PA 15222.
